Bauer to Close 49 Radio Stations

Announcements -

Bauer has today announced the news that they will be closing 49 local, commercial radio stations across the country to replace them with nationally-networked content broadcast from their London Studios under the ‘Greatest Hits Radio‘ banner.

This follows a similar move by Global earlier this year that saw the sad loss of Rugby FM.

A limited number of stations will keep their names but will broadcast networked content outside of 6-10AM Weekdays.

Many job losses are sure to accompany this sad news.

The loss of this ‘Local-ness’ will deprive listeners of truly local radio presented by local people who care and have an interest in local issues.

The opportunities that this will present to progressive local community radios such as ours with aspirations to broadcast on FM and DAB has not gone unnoticed.

We are in a great position to ‘pick up the baton’ to allow those listeners that Love Local to enjoy a viable alternative, but for now we mourn the loss of these 49 stations and the on/off air talent that have lost their jobs as a result.
