Council’s support for Empty Homes Week 2019

Daventry News -

Daventry District Council (DDC) is calling on owners of empty properties to come forward for support and advice to help bring them back into use.

The Council is supporting National Empty Homes Week 2019, a UK-wide campaign to raise awareness of the issue which runs until Sunday (29 September).

Recent figures show there are around 376 empty properties in Daventry District – ranking the area second lowest in the county and among the lowest in England – and DDC is keen to reduce this figure further.

Owners of empty homes are urged to contact them to discuss ways of bringing their properties back into use, ranging from advice on repair works and possible funding streams to options such as joining the Council’s private sector leasing scheme to help people on the local housing register.

Homeowners in Daventry District who leave their properties unoccupied for two years or more are charged a rate of 150% on their Council Tax bill, a measure introduced by DDC to help incentivise bringing them back into use.

Residents are also encouraged to report to the Council any properties they believe are empty or that have fallen into disrepair so that action can be taken to address them. The Council also has the power to use Empty Dwelling Management Orders – this is a last resort tool for the Council and will only be used if owners fail to work with the Council to bring the property back into use

Councillor Richard Auger, Housing and Environmental Health Portfolio Holder said: “Properties could be left unoccupied for all kinds of reasons, but they can have a real impact on local communities and it’s important that we work with owners to reduce the number of empty properties in our District.

“I would encourage anyone with an empty property to come and talk to us to discuss the options available to them and what help and support we could provide. Similarly if people know about an empty property or one that is falling into disrepair, please contact us.”

Property owners or residents reporting an empty home can contact the Council by email or call 01327 871100.

Empty Homes Week 2019 runs from 23 to 29 September and is spearheaded by the campaigning organisation Action on Empty Homes – for more details visit
