Cricket: Another Cup Final on the cards for Willoughby Seconds after St Crispin success.

Willoughby Cricket Club’s second string have the prospect of a second successive Northants Cricket League cup final this weekend after they negotiated a semi-final victory at St Crispin and Ryelands 4ths.

The side travelled looking for revenge in the end of season Division 12 cup semi-final after they suffered a defeat in the league campaign. Skipper Ryan Perry won the toss and batted first on what looked like a well-manicured surface, in the end it was the correct decision resulting in booking their place in the Final.

Openers Matt Cartridge (33) and Michael Deery (35) negotiated the first 15 overs with a challenging wicket to bat on with plenty of spit and dead bounce. Both openers departing cementing a good score of 87 for 2 after 22 overs. The pressure was increased with good bowling spells from Robinson (2-27) and Hurle (3 – 53) only saw the visitors up to 103 for 4 after the 30 over mark with the in-form Ambrose Deery and Martin Nichols finding the conditions difficult. With wickets in hand Matt Sutton (40) was the anchor for Willoughby who increased the run rate to 7 an over for the last 10 overs, Willoughby finishing on a competitive 179 for 7.

After the break Rees Moore (2-18) and Ryan Lines (5-34) put the home side under pressure in the opening 16 overs, the wicket playing its part in a few early dismissals. At 50 for 5 the home team bunkered down to rebuild the innings under the stewardship of Matt Tarry (23) and B Smith (21) but the bowling change to Archie McMillan (1-25) and Matt Sutton (1-25) kept them at bay into the 30th over. Chasing seven an over which increased to nine, the counterattack began but failed to gain momentum and the middle and late order, although travelling at six to eight an over lost wickets at crucial intervals and were eventually all out for 138 off 36.4 overs.

It means the divisional final brings together the top two sides as runners-up Willoughby now travel to promoted champions Carrib Utd in the Final looking to gain revenge on them from winning the league campaign and home and away defeats in doing so.
