Cricket at home during coronavirus lockdown

The coronavirus lockdown has meant disappointment so far for our local cricketers at all levels of the game.

With the professional game in the UK suspended until at least early July, it is a similar story where local recreational club cricket is concerned with no play or club activity until further notice. In fact, at the time of writing there is a lot of uncertainty whether any cricket will be played at all this summer.

The lack of cricket will also be a disappointment to many of the area’s young budding cricketers who were just about all set to start their junior and youth league seasons or get involved in the ECB’s All Stars programme and new Dynamos Cricket.  However help is at hand with a host of resources available which kids – and mums and dads – can try at home.

Chance to Shine is a national charity that aims to give all children the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket. It has been providing some weekly skills challenges on their You Tube channel and social media to support children to stay active. Each week they are uploading two new activities for children to try at home.

Check out the sessions so far:

Week 1 – Cool Catcher

Week 2 – Brilliant Bowler

Week 3 – Super Striker

Week 4 – Creative Cricketer

Week 5 – Ferocious Fielder

Week 6 – Skilful Scorer

Look out for more of these great sessions from Chance to Shine each week on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Willoughby Cricket Club have also been doing their bit to stay connected to the game and their community during lockdown, by producing their own #PassTheBall Lockdown Challenge video.

Head to their website at or on Facebook and Twitter (@willoughbycc) to see the video and also see details of other cricket resources to explore and play from home.
