Cricket: Century and a six-fer for Willoughby in Saturday winning double

A century for Ashley Rayner and a six wicket haul for Fergus Deery helped Willoughby to two victories in their Northamptonshire Cricket League fixtures on Saturday.

Rayner made an unbeaten 122 as the 1st XI eased past visitors S & L Corby IIs by 148 runs at The Green. He was supported by Chait Kurusala making 80 and Scott Cluley making 70 in their total of 286 for 2.

In reply, the visitors could only reach 138 before their last wicket fell. Martin Pearce (46) and Luke Jackson (36) top scoring as Dan Farrow took 2 for 26.

Willoughby’s Saturday seconds continued their good start to the season with a 48 run victory in the early season top of the table clash with fellow pace setters Northampton Saints at Bugbrooke.

The initial signs were not so promising for the visitors for after Saints won the toss and stuck them into bat first, the opening spell saw them reduced to 13 for 3 in the fifth over. It took a steady and resilient 100 partnership from Jake Quinney and Martin Nichols to bring back some stability to proceedings, Saints attempting to try different options, then bring back the openers to force a wicket. In the 28th over it finally came with the score on 113 as both Nichols (39) and Quinney (27) departed in quick succession. With wickets in hand the middle and lower order progressed the innings towards the 40th over, Matt Goss leading a late push making 21. The innings ending 168 for 9 with Litchfield the pick of the bowling taking 5 for 45.

Saints started off steadily spearheaded by Litchfield and despite one wicket for Rees Moor in the opening 15 overs things were on the edge at 52 for 1. However a bowling change of Fergus Deery and Michael Deery proved pivotal as the latter dismissed Litchfield for 29, ahead of a cluster of wickets then falling at regular intervals. The only resistance being a bludgeoning knock from Austin (34) the only thing keeping the win at bay. Fergus Deery being underestimated with some flight and guile to record figures of 6 for 33. Mike Deery 2 for 25. The Saints innings finishing on 120 all out.
