Cricket: Mixed midweek fortunes for Willoughby in the RDCL

There were contrasting fortunes for Willoughby Cricket Club’s T20 sides on Wednesday in the Rugby and District Cricket League (RDCL) with a convincing win and a quick-fire heavy defeat.

In Division 2 a second successive victory came the way of their Midweek A side at the expense of visitors North Kilworth but not without a mid-order panic late in proceedings.

Captain Ashley Rayner won the toss and asked North Kilworth to bat first and they saw some good tight bowling from Jake Quinney (4 overs, 2 wickets for 15) and Mark Fell (3 overs, 2 for 12) keeping the visitors to 99 for 8 their 18 overs. Opener Mike Dunkley top scoring for Kilworth with 45.

In reply, the hosts overcame the early loss of Scott Cluely run out for a duck as opener Ceri Roberts (54) and Hassan Nawaz (34) took to the visitor’s bowling, almost winning the game in their partnership of 90. However Nawaz fell three runs short of the target and his wicket triggered a mid-order wobble and the subsequent sight of Willoughby batsmen hurriedly padding up as Ben Hollis and Martyn Norman fell in successive balls, earning Kilworth’s Ben Watson a deserved hat-trick.

However any such further alarms were quelled as Willoughby got the handful of runs needed to finish the job, winning by five wickets with almost five overs to spare.

  • The story was not so bright at Webb Ellis Road as Willoughby B’s trip to face their Rugby CC counterparts was a short-lived affair, the hosts romping away with things by nine wickets.

The visitors batted first and they never recovered from falling to 7 for 3, losing a further four wickets for six runs to be reduced further to 36 for 7, and eventually bowled out for 54 with just over seven overs of their innings still to use. Adam Milsom took 3 for 11 for the hosts, along with a pair of wickets for Brett Markham and Matt Raffell.

Rugby’s reply was swift, reaching the target inside nine overs with Kieran Vaghela leading the way on 25 not out. Nirmay Patel (1 for 14) took Willoughby’s solitary wicket on an otherwise forgettable night for the visitors.
