Cricket: Successive league centuries for Deery as Willoughby seconds start league in dominant fashion

A century from Michael Deery went some way to seeing Willoughby’s Saturday second string get the club’s Northants Cricket League (NCL) season off to a flying start with a thumping win away at Irthlingborough Town IIIs.

The visitors were asked to bat first at the host’s pretty outground at Boughton and they showed their intent early on with Matt Cartridge reaching fifty inside only six overs before departing for 51. Fellow opener Ian Andrews made a more patient 52 with Martin Nichols adding 34, but it was Deery who stole the show with the batting to record his second successive ton in NCL games, this after reaching three figures in his last league outing at the end of the last term. This ton came off the last ball of the innings with a six to reach 103 not out as Willoughby closed on 297 for 7.  Louis Gardner-Frost took 2 for 75 for the hosts.

In reply, Irthlingborough had it all to do and were never in the hunt with all of the top seven batters departing for single figure scores as Rees Moor (2 for 4) and Sean Thornton (4 for 21) made initial inroads. Bob McDonald in at eight made 22 but his quick fire innings only held up the visitor’s inevitable progress as Fergus Deery mopped up the tail with two wickets to bowl the hosts out for 55, giving Willoughby victory by 242 runs.

  • Willoughby’s Saturday first eleven were in equally destructive mode as they made comfortable work of their friendly encounter with South Northants League visitors Towcestrians.

With both sides having free weeks in their respective leagues, it was another useful workout for Ben Hollis’ side as they warm up for the start of their NCL campaign this Saturday.

The host chose to bowl first and saw the teenage pace duo of Dan Farrow and Jake Quinney set the tone with useful eight over spells; Farrow taking 2 for 31 and Quinney 2 for 25 with Tows opener Chris Straw offering some resistance making 22. Hollis came on first change to take out the middle order with 3 for 17 off four overs, and although Andy Clark’s 32 off 27 balls down the order took the visitors past three figures, they were bowled out for 125.

In reply, Chaitanya Kurusala and Scott Cluley made light work of the run chase, finding the gaps with relative ease and finding the boundary off the bad ball. Kurusala finished on 65 not out with Cluely on 34 as Willoughby reached their target of 126 for 0 in only 19 overs.
