Cricket: Willoughby’s NCL season fizzles out but hope for 2nds in KO Cup

Two defeats in the league and end-of-season cup competition brought Willoughby’s season to a disappointing close, but there is still some hope for the club with their second string progressing to the last four of their divisional competition.

Northants Cricket League Division 6

Willoughby v Northampton Saints II

(played Saturday 28th August)

Northampton Saints II 243 for 4

Willoughby 233 all out

Northampton Saints won by 10 runs

Willoughby’s last league outing of their 2021 NCL season ended in defeat as visitors Northampton Saints second string gained revenge from their previous reverse fixture.

Batting first, Saints set a commanding target for the hosts to chase, posting 243 for the loss of only 4 wickets.  Joshua Muscutt-Brown led the way for the visitors making a fine 111, with fellow opener Jack Bates making 69.  Nikesh Mistry was the most successful of the six Willoughby bowlers used taking 2 for 50 off 7 overs.

Willoughby’s reply once again faltered in early momentum as the top order got starts but could not kick on. Ashley Rayner made 24 before Matt Cartridge top scored with 75 and although Mistry made a late 34, the hosts still had seven and a half overs at their disposal when they were bowled out 10 runs shy of the target.  Finley Wake’s 3 for 22 proved the most effective of the Saints bowlers with Bates (2 for 30) and Lewis Shelton (2 for 36) also chipping in.

The result sees Willoughby finish in seventh place in the league table, just inside the top 8 ‘cut-off’ ahead of the proposed league structuring for 2022 which although provisionally will still see them face most of the sides above them in the final standings, could see them drop a division.

Division 12

Carrib United II v Willoughby II

Willoughby II 154 for 9

Carrib United II 156 for 6

Carrib United II won by 4 wickets

Willoughby’s second string’s final league encounter of the season also ended in defeat as hosts and promoted division champions Carrib United won the battle of the top two.

The visitors batted first and saw father and son openers Ian and James Andrews make 17 and 19, before Sean Thornton and Matthew Sutton chipped in with 32 and 33 respectively. But with single digits knocks and little support elsewhere on the card, their final total of 154 for 9 looked below par in the face of Wendel Pemberton taking 4 for 39.

And so it proved as Carrib got their target with just over seven overs to spare.

Openers Abid Zia (24) and Saad Anjum (top scoring with 52) gave them the early momentum, and despite a mid-order wobble after their departures, Pembleton’s 32 not out along with Cedric Miller adding 21 not out saw Carrib home.

Matthew Sutton and Fergus Deery sharing the Willoughby success with the ball with three wickets apiece.

The result still leaves Willoughby’s seconds finishing as runners-up in the table although with only one promotion place on offer, it remains to be seen whether the revised league formation may grant them a move up the ladder too.

Mears Ashby v Willoughby

(played Saturday 4th September)

Willoughby 193 for 9

Mears Ashby 194 for 6

Mears Ashby won by 4 wickets

Willoughby’s NCL commitments for the 2021 season ended in disappointing fashion as they fell to defeat in the end of season divisional cup at the first hurdle once again, this time away at Mears Ashby.

The visitors batted first and saw makeshift opener Dan Farrow made 49 before Ashley Rayner added a top score of 68, but with little in the way of additional support and single figure contributions, Willoughby’s total of 193 for 9 was short on being competitive. Zaheer Iqbal and Jack Gardner took 3 for 24 and 3 for 30 for the hosts with the ball.

In reply, Mears recovered from two early losses to be guided by their middle order, eventually reaching their target with three overs in hand. Igbal top scored with 50, Gardner added 29 with Michael Pennington making 26 and Alex Skerrett 25 as the value of several contributions with the bat saw them through to the semi-finals by four wickets.

Division 12 KO Cup

Willoughby II v Great Oakley II

Willoughby II 274 for 6

Great Oakley II 107 all out

Willoughby II won by 167 runs

There was better news where Willoughby’s second eleven were concerned as they overpowered their Great Oakley counterparts to progress to the last four of the Division 12 KO Cup.

The eventual 167 runs success was underpinned by an imposing target set of 274 for 6 from their 40 overs, highlighted by identical knocks of 69 by Ambrose Deery and Ryan Lines. Martin Nichols also added 33 and Michael Deery 23 to the total which Great Oakley never troubled. Although skipper John Pratt top scored with 29, he found little support as Lines took 5 for 27 and Michael Deery and dad Fergus both chipped in with two wickets apiece to bowl the visitors out for 107, earning Willoughby a semi-final date this Saturday away at St Crispin and Ryelands 4ths.
