Daventry Country Park is celebrating its 20th year of membership to an exclusive club recognising Britain’s best public parks and green spaces.
The Park received its 20th Green Flag Award today (Tuesday 16 July) in recognition of its excellent facilities and high maintenance standards.
The Green Flag Award is judged on a range of criteria including first impressions when entering a park, how clean, well-maintained, healthy, safe and secure it is for visitors and how well the site is managed and promoted.
It also recognises work carried out towards encouraging community involvement, sustainability, conservation and heritage.
This year’s milestone award was celebrated by representatives from Daventry District Council and its partners Daventry Norse together with Park Rangers, staff from the popular Reservoir Café, and volunteers from the Friends of Daventry Country Park.
The announcement comes amid a £750,000 improvement project at the Park, which has already seen the children’s play area transformed. Improvements to the toilets, Visitor Centre, café, paths, walkways and jetties will follow in the coming year.
The award also proved the perfect way to mark Love Parks Week (12-21 July), a national campaign which aims to shine a spotlight on our best green spaces.
During the week visitors to the park are being encouraged to share their favourite photos and memories by visiting the Country Park’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/daventrycountrypark, or by using the hashtags #lovedaventry and #loveparks.
The Friends of Daventry Country Park are also holding a Canal Towpath Walk from the park to Braunston on Sunday 21 July, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10am.
And on Saturday 3 August the park will host the popular Family Cinema Day, offering free screenings of Peter Rabbit (PG) at 11am, Mary Poppins Returns (U) at 1pm, and The Greatest Showman (PG) at 4pm.
Visitors can also try stand-up paddle boarding with Maizu SUP on Friday evenings and Saturdays until the end of August by visiting www.maizu.co.uk to book their place.
Councillor Alan Hills, Daventry District Council’s Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder said: “We’re thrilled that Daventry Country Park will once again fly the Green Flag with pride. A lot of hard work goes into maintaining the park to the high standards required of the award, so to have achieved that so consistently over the years is very pleasing, and I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to everyone involved.
“We are in the midst of an exciting programme of works which will improve the park even further, and I’m looking forward to seeing that progress over the coming months. I hope the community will continue to support us by taking pride in this wonderful park, and by making the most of all it has to offer.”
