Daventry Farm Suspended from Red Tractor Scheme amid Animal Welfare Concerns
A report from the Daily Mail online earlier today has highlighted Animal Welfare concerns and the subsequent suspension of Berryfields Farm Ltd from the Red Tractor Scheme.
The report and suspension are based on footage recorded by the Animal Justice Project. The Secret filming showed stockmen beating and abusing the animals at the farm, which operates from concrete-floor lots rather than green fields in a so-called ‘zero grazing’ system.
‘it reveals a catalogue of abuse and neglect’. ‘Abusing cows by punching, kicking, throwing buckets in their faces, and hitting them with pipes can never be a kind option.’
Spokesman, Claire Palmer of the Animal Justice Project.
Pub chain Wetherspoon along with Supermarkets Tesco and Lidl have been quick to ban beef sourced from the Farm.
Located on the A45 just outside of Daventry, Cattle reared in sheds on the US-style factory farm suffered severe lameness, making it painful and difficult to walk.
‘Lameness causes severe, long-term pain.
Prof Andrew Knight, Veterinary Professor of Animal Welfare and Ethics, at the University of Winchester
Answering the Daily Mail article, Berryfield Farm Ltd issued a statement on their FaceBook page where they claimed the cattle in question were ‘owned and tended to by a third-party who employed his own staff to handle his own cattle’.
