Daventry town centre has been recognised in the Great British High StreetAwards: Rising Star category.

A delegation from Daventry Retail Forum (DRF) attended the Great British High Street Awards 2019 ceremony in Edinburgh on Thursday (23 January), to hear the results from the contest.

The awards, sponsored by Visa, celebrate all those who work tirelessly to make the nation’s high streets and communities great. It was presented by Rt Hon Jake Berry MP, Cabinet Minister for the Northern Powerhouse.

Out of the 185 entries for the Rising Star category, Daventry town was named in the top 10, following a nomination by DRF an independent community of local retailers who are passionate about improving life in Daventry and increasing footfall in the town centre.

Lorna White, co-ordinator of the Daventry Retail Forum, said: “We are thrilled to have reached the finals of the Great British High Street Awards – we never expected to get this far, particularly as Daventry Retail Forum had only been running 18 months when we decided to enter.

By entering the awards, we have achieved national coverage for Daventry, and even hosted a visit from John Lewis Partnership Chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield, who was interested in exploring the challenges of 21st century retailing and understanding how Daventry’s retailers were collaborating with other community groups to make their home town a thriving destination.

“The retail forum has learnt so much from taking part in the GB High Street Awards and will be applying this knowledge in next year’s awards as well as sharing best practice with other towns. Well done to the category winners Yarm, Stockton-in-Tees for their brilliant effort.”

Lorna added: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone for their support and would like to thank our residents, retailers, the local media, town and district councils for getting behind us.”
