People can learn about edible plants and fungi at a series of foraging courses taking place at Daventry Country Park this spring and summer.
Led by Kerry Bowness of the Foraging Course Company, the courses will take people on a tour of the park showing them how to identify commonly growing foods to forage for, how to avoid poisonous lookalikes, and hints on where to look.

There will be tips on correct identification and harvesting, as well as recipe ideas and an opportunity to sample pre-made wild food treats along the way, such as soups, pickles, syrups, jams and vinegars.
The courses include an overview of the rules and laws governing wild food foraging in the UK and some safety guidelines, plus a digital information sheet to serve as a post-course reminder.
They take place on 12 April, 18 May and 9 June and all run from midday to 3.30pm, at a cost of £35 per person.
Kerry said: “My love of foraging is borne from a lifelong passion for natural history, being outdoors and gardening. While studying for my degree, I happened across some information regarding the edibility of ornamental plants. This triggered a desire to find out how many wild plants and mushrooms I knew were also edible.
“Cue an obsession with discovering more about wild edibles, experimenting with different flavours, and encouraging others to take a different look at what is growing right on their doorsteps.
“I love sharing this knowledge, and that is why I created The Foraging Course Company. The courses aim to inspire people to look at plants and fungi differently, and to encourage them to ‘rewild’ edible species in areas such as gardens and allotments. People are often surprised to discover that some of the ‘weeds’ they are chucking on the compost heap are actually tasty edibles.”
Councillor Alan Hills, Portfolio Holder for Community, Culture and Leisure on Daventry District Council, said: “We are always looking for new events and activities for visitors to enjoy and these courses offer a great new way to explore the Country Park and its rich plant life.”
