Match report, courtesy of Brian Porter…

With Town having already secured the point at Pinchbeck on Saturday that they required to take the UCL Premier Division title, there was a party feel around Elderstubbs for this local derby and the final home fixture of an historic season. The biggest crowd of season, 393, basked in the warm sunshine as Rugby Town gave the Town a guard of honour as they came on the pitch to warm applause from both sets of supporters.

On the pitch, Town’s top scorer Luke Emery returned to the starting line up after missing the Pinchbeck match after turning his ankle on a very difficult pitch. Not so lucky was Saturday’s goal scorer Sam Jackson whose ankle is still badly swollen after suffering the same fate. Adam Creaney was only on the bench after picking up a knee injury during training.

Understandably, with the heat and both teams having played on Saturday, the game started slowly and had the feel of the pre=season friendly, however once a few tackles started to go in the pace picked up somewhat.

Captain Ross Harris and his defence were looking solid as they have all season. Very little got through and when it did, the Moldovan keeper Iustin Cerga was equal to it.

Town were forced to make a change midway through the first half when Dean Lukeman took a knock and he limped off to be replaced by Dan Childs.

Luke Emery had a good chance after outpacing and out muscling two defenders before his shot was well saved by Matt Hill, diving to his right.

Kieran Fitzgerald made the opening goal for Town after good work down the left. Turning his man, he cut in on the by line before finding Luke Emery. He effort was tipped onto the post by Hill however FITZGERALD had continued his run into the box and he fired the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Charlie Evans did have a chance to equalise just before half time however Harris was there to get a challenge in which saw the striker’s effort clear the bar.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Town looked impenetrable.

It was KIERAN FITZGERALD who got the second goal for Town on 75 minutes after his pace took him into the box before beating two Rugby defenders and slotting the ball home.

Town made the game safe on 82 minutes. Fitzgerald found Adam Creaney out wide and his cross in from the right was misjudged by the keeper. Crowd favourite RICO ALEXANDER adjusted his feet to nod the ball over the line for his first goal of the season.

The crowd were now in party mood as the clock ticked down to the final whistle.

The trophy and medals were presented to the team by UCL Chairman Alan Poulain.

Town now travel to second placed Deeping Rangers for the final league match of the season before they attempt the double when they face Holbeach United in the UCL Knock Out Final on May 6th at Raunds Town FC.

Supporters who still wish to submit their Player of the Season Vote should do so to Brian Porter via club.secretary@dtfc.co.uk prior to the Clubs Presentation Night which will be held on Friday the 3rd May
