Fairport Cropredy Convention 40th Anniversary This Weekend!

UPDATE – DR reporter Steve Edwards went to Cropredy and provided this report.

The tiny village of Cropredy will see its population of 720 people shoot to as many as 20,000 this coming weekend as the evermore popular Fairport Cropredy Convention takes place. This amazing festival right on Daventry’s doorstep – is aimed at all ages with an emphasis on families and it has developed a reputation as a particularly friendly and safe festival. The majority of festival-goers camp for the duration of the event. The event will take place Thursday 8, Friday 9 and Saturday 10 August 2019 at Cropredy in Oxfordshire, three miles from Junction 11 of the M40 motorway.

In 1980, the first festival sold two barrels of beer and this year it’s anticipated that Wadworth Brewery will sell up to 90,000 pints during the festival. The event is renowned for Wadworth’s real ale bar which is used by the public and performers alike (there is no back-stage bar) making Cropredy one of the few major events where festival-goers mingle with the musicians.

The history of the event goes back to 1976, when Fairport Convention members Dave Pegg and Dave Swarbrick moved to Cropredy and the band played an impromptu concert to support the village fete’s fundraising. The event took place in the garden of Prescote Manor and was repeated in 1977 and 1978 (when nearly 2,000 people turned up).

In 1981, the second reunion took place at Broughton Castle, south of Banbury. This was Fairport’s first two-day festival and also the only time ‘Cropredy’ has been staged away from its home village. The festival returned to Cropredy the following year. Until 1986, the event was billed as the Annual Fairport Reunion. From 1987 it was advertised as Fairport’s twentieth anniversary celebration. In 1988 it was renamed Cropredy Festival and then Cropredy Music Festival. Since 2005 the title has been Fairport’s Cropredy Convention.

From 2000 onwards, the festival was extended from two to three days and in 2007, for the first time in the event’s history, romall the tickets were sold before the gates opened. This happened again in 2014 and was repeated in 2017.

In recent years the festival has led the way in championing many ‘green’ festival issues and, with around 250,000 tents being left at music festivals across the UK, Cropredy organisers have joined big retailers such as Argos and Tesco to back a call to say ‘no’ to single-use tents and festival-goers are being urged to take their tents home for re-use.

The organisers have previously backed a ‘Drastic On Plastic’ initiative which has been a great success at Cropredy.
