Rugby Borough have been crowned champions of the Everards Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division.
Their 5-3 win at home over visitors Sileby Town coupled with nearest challengers Allexton and New Park only being able to draw ensured the title was heading to Kilsby Lane.
With several key players out with injuries, the visit of Sileby had potential to be a bigger challenge than usual. This proved to be the case after Borough initially took a confident 3-1 first half lead with a brace of goals from skipper Dale Linton and Ashley Piper. Further goals from Ryan Palmer and Tom Bishop after the break looked to have sealed the deal but Sileby did not lie down and added two further goals of their own in the latter stages.
Nevertheless, with a 5-3 victory and three points in the bag, it was a tense 30 minutes wait after the game before news came that Allexton & New Parks had drawn their match, meaning that Borough were now out of reach and had secured the title.
With it comes promotion from the Everards Leicestershire Senior League to Step 6 of the non-league football pyramid.
Speaking on the news of promotion, Manager Dan Carter said:
“I want to say a massive well done to the lads for getting the job done, especially over the last few weeks where the squad has been tested with several regulars missing through injury. They have worked hard all season and credit to them for sticking at it.
They have made my job so easy at times and we’ve got our rewards! The table doesn’t lie, and it’s fully deserved, which is a big statement when I personally feel they haven’t played well for a majority of the campaign.
There’s still a few gears they can go up, but now is not the time to rest.
We’ll start to build for step 6 football, but I don’t feel I need to change much as I have 80% of the lads I had at Long Buckby when we got promoted from Step 6 to the UCL Premier Division, so we are confident of going for it again next season.”
“Thank you also to Brian Crinigan, Steve Turner and Brian Dainty for the continued support and all the work they do behind the scenes, which helps us massively; it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
This Saturday (16th April), there will be a promotion party at Kilsby Lane to celebrate the team’s success, ahead of their game with Blaby & Whetstone Athletic. The match kicks off at 3:00 pm followed by the cup presentation. All are welcome from midday through to 6:00 pm.
