Football: Borough Ladies progress to last 16 of County Cup

Rugby Borough Ladies showed no signs of rustiness after a week’s break as they progressed to the last 16 of the Birmingham County Cup with a 3-1 win over Cradley Town Ladies.

With another full and strong squad available for this home fixture, Rugby started on top creating many chances within the first 20 minutes of the game. So it was perhaps no surprise when Sam Smyth scored the first goal of the game, scoring from the edge of the box when a loose ball from a corner comes straight to her.

The hosts continued to play well but were pegged back against the run of play by half time as a brief lapse saw Cradley capitalise and score from distance to make it 1-1 at the break.

It was much of the same in the second half with Borough adding continuous pressure to the visitors and they got their rewards just before the hour. A free kick on the edge of the box saw Tammy Davies step up to take and score direct to put the hosts back in front again.

Plenty more chances came and went Borough’s way, the closest with Lauren Clarke hitting the crossbar. However their pressure finally told when the third goal arrived to seal the tie. If there was a slight air of fortune about it, it was probably deserved for their dominance with Sydney Lowe swinging in a corner that misses everyone and finds the back of the net to make it 3-1.

  • Next game for Borough is this Sunday where they are back in league action at home to Cookley Ladies.
