Football: Bump in the road as Borough suffer back-to-back defeats

Rugby Area Sport -

Rugby Borough suffered two defeats inside three days which saw them fall at the semi-final stage of the County Vase and fall back into second in the league.

First they bowed out of the Birmingham County FA Vase on Saturday with defeat at home to Cadbury Athletic before a second reversal at Kilsby Lane came when visitors Thurnby Rangers took the points in their league encounter on Monday.

Borough went into Saturday’s BCFA Vase semi-final on the back of a league defeat the previous weekend and were up against Midland Football League side Cadbury who had not lost in 17 games. So the expectancy was high for a close fought game and it did not disappoint.

The visitors went ahead midway through the first half as a good run and cross hit the Cadbury striker in the mid-riff and went in, proving enough to earn them a half time lead.

Borough typically came out attacking in the second half and clawed their way back level just after the hour with Dale Linton the scorer.

However the lead lasted all of two minutes as Cadbury regained the advantage from a penalty after Biddle brought down their forward in the area, who got up and dispatched the spot kick into the corner.

Borough were the better team at that time but they did not take their chances and were duly punished late on as they pushed up looking for an equaliser, Cadbury catching the hosts on the break and putting away a third goal in the dying minutes to seal the tie and Borough’s exit from the competition.

That disappointment was then doubled last night (Monday) as Borough crashed to their third defeat of the season against third placed Thurnby Rangers.

A healthy crowd at Kilsby Lane saw an entertaining goalless first half, before Thurnby took the lead ten minutes after the break by capitalising on a defensive mix up in the host’s ranks allowing Lewis Murphy to fire high into the net.

Borough started to pile on the pressure and equalised when Ethan Meadows shot through a crowd of players and into the corner.

From here it was the hosts who started to take the game by the scruff of the neck and piled more pressure on the Thurby keeper who made numerous saves to keep the scores level.

But as was the case on Saturday, again Borough were undone by a sucker punch with a great goal from Thurnby’s Shuan Barber and once his side hit the front again they then saw out the game comfortably to claim the three points and inflict a third straight defeat for Borough.

  • Having dropped back into second in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division table, Rugby Borough now face three away games on the bounce against sides in the lower half of the standings HERE

Their travels start on Saturday with visit to Magna 73 before a visit to Ashby Ivanhoe next Wednesday, and a trip to Quorn to play Pro-Chance Football a week on Saturday 2nd April).

New leaders Allexton & New Parks FC again took advantage of Borough being in cup action by moving back to the top of the pile, but Borough trail by only a point and still have three games in hand over them.

  • A mention of congratulations also to Rugby Borough Royals who lifted the Rugby and District Sunday Football League Division 1 title on Sunday. They rounded off an unbeaten season in style with 10-0 and 14-0 victories in consecutive weeks. Player/Manager Mark Brazier has done a fine job with a team of dedicated lads this season.
