Football: Halim double maintains unbeaten run for leaders Rugby Borough

Two goals either side of half time from Halim Halim maintained Rugby Borough’s 100% start to the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division season with a hard fought 2-0 success at Hathern.

But the league leaders did not have it all their own way with their hosts proving difficult opponents who threw away a host of chances.

A late change was made to the Borough line up with Goalkeeper Biddle complaining of a stomach upset with Dale Linton taking the gloves and he was soon called into action as Hathern had the first chance straight from the kick off, the ball beating Sam Beasley to let through the home striker through on goal but he blasted over the bar.

Borough then went up the other end and took the lead still with only two minutes on the clock. Bren King released Halim who skipped passed a couple of defenders and shot through the keepers legs and into the net for 1-0.

The visitors should have made it two straight after as Charlie Whiteside failed to get a shot in and from the resulting corner Castleton headed over.

Hathern were playing a high line and Borough took a while to work it out being caught offside on numerous occasions with the Hathern keeper playing a dual role as sweeper, and as a result the hosts came more and more into the game with good chances to equalise, one slicing off the bar and Linton making a decent save from another.

So a slender lead at half time and the second half was a cagey affair with Hathern doing all the pressing and Borough defending well and counter attacking. Hathern should of equalized when their striker was clean through but again he blazed high and wide, before Beasley came to the rescue with a timely tackle to thwart another opening on goal.

After those scares, Borough increased their lead just after the hour as Halim cut in from the left and squeezed a shot past the Hathern keeper.

More chances to further increase their lead fell to substitutes Piper, Meadows and King whilst Hathern again missed two decent chances to cut the deficit. On 80 minutes Linton made a miraculous double save from a bewildered Hathern striker to keep Borough on top. But the visitors held firm in the latter stages to keep a clean sheet and record another three points, which keeps them five points clear at the top of the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division table with two games also in hand over Allexton & New Parks FC in second and 12 points clear of Thurnby Rangers in third.

  • Borough do not have a game this Saturday owing to an outbreak of COVID at their scheduled opponents Magna FC. Instead, Borough’s next game is away to Northfield Emerald on Saturday 4th December.
