Football: Rugby Borough go nap over Highfield Rangers to continue 100% Run

Rugby Borough maintained their unbeaten run in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division on Saturday disposing of Highfield Rangers 5-0 in a one sided contest.

In near monsoon conditions and with Borough again making changes to the starting line up it was a slow start in which each side was trying to settle down to some sort of playing pattern. However it was Highfield who threatened first from a corner. The returning Whittam cleared the ball off the line and Highfield again used their height advantage to win headers in the box and this time Josh Hughes coming to the rescue.

Borough could still not get their game together with the returning Jack Hilton having no luck up front and the hosts losing lots of second balls back to their more aggressive opponents.

All that changed on 15 minutes Farrow bursting down the right and crossing to the unmarked Alex Webb who flicked the ball up and volleyed into the top of the net.

At last Borough were getting some momentum but not without a couple of scares at the back. The physical Highfield side were certainly giving their all and should have equalised at the midpoint of the half as the visitor’s striker whacked the ball over the bar when clear on goal.

Tommy Glasscoe started to master the midfield area for Borough and Brad Harris who was alongside him provided the pass for Boroughs second goal. The pair combined seeing Glasscoe continuing his run and then finding the bottom corner with a fine finish.

With the rain still pouring the second half proved a more eventful half with Borough now dominating play. Linton and then Farrow should have added to the scoreline but both efforts went wide.

A host of substitutes were made by Borough which unsettled them initially but that was put right by Halim Halin as he skipped past two defenders and passed the ball into the net to make it 3-0.

Any chance of a Highfield comeback was out to bed when Borough got a fourth goal with Linton then getting in on the act. A great ball from Castleton from the back found Brannen King who crossed for Linton to fire home from an acute angle.

And four became five eight minutes later as Charlie Cook galloping away to chip over the keeper to round off the scoring and seal the three points.

This Saturday Borough host Cottesmore who ran away with the league last year before it was defaulted, so it should be an interesting game. Kick-off is at 3:00 pm and entry is FREE.

  • Borough’s game on Monday 12th October at home to table toppers Thurnby has been postponed for now with the visitors requesting a stand down.
