Football: Sweet sixteen for Borough with Thurnby away day success

Daventry News -

Rugby Borough’s return to Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division duty on Saturday proved successful one as they edged out hosts Thurnby Rangers 2-1.

The first game back after the Christmas break had the prospects of being a post-festive season cracker as third played first at Darkyn Road and it was the visitors who took the honours in a close contest to stretch their unbeaten run to 16 games.

With a boggy pitch not helped by a pre match downfall, the game started off at a slow pace with both sides looking for early openings. Thurnby played some neat football and were on top for the first ten minutes, however on Borough’s first real attack they grabbed the lead. Ash Piper was released down the right and crossed for the unmarked Halim Halim to slot home to make it 1-0.

Borough had opportunities to increase their lead with Jordan Featherstone, Piper and Halim all missing the target when in good positions. Thurnby were pushing more men forward but some good defending by Thomas Castleton and Price kept Thurnby out with Borough’s Biddle being the busier of the two goalkeepers just before half time.

Borough started the second period  stroking the ball around with ease and with the pressure on their opponents to get back into the game by pushing men forward it was leaving gaps for the Borough midfielders to play in Featherstone and Piper, the former and Tommy Glasscoe both having efforts sail over the bar but the visitors were made to pay for their missed opportunities as it was Thurnby who struck next.

Price stopped a home attack in its tracks and from the resulting free kick ex-Borough player Shawn Barber curled a wonderful free kick around the wall and beyond the despairing dive of Biddle to bring the sides level at 1-1

It was all to play for now and Borough seemed to find another gear with Thurnby getting fresh legs on to help their cause. But it was Borough who re-took the lead with nine minutes left. A great move from the back saw Glasscoe feed Featherstone just outside the box. He took one touch and smashed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards to send the Borough players, management and supporters into wild celebration.

The drama was not quite over as Thurnby had a couple of goals disallowed for offsides late on but Borough who held on to claim another valuable three points and remain on course for promotion.

  • This Saturday Rugby Borough have a home game in the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Vase where they will welcome Gornal Athletic who currently occupy top spot in the West Midlands Regional League. Kick off at Kilsby Lane is at 2:00 pm.
