Give your views on new cemetery proposals

Daventry News -

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on proposals for a new cemetery in Daventry Town.

Daventry District Council (DDC) is seeking people’s views on the desire for a new cemetery and, if provided, the possible locations for it. The consultation is being launched as the current cemetery in Welton Road is almost at full capacity, with fewer than 200 burial plots left which are expected to be used in the next two to three years.

The Council has carried out some initial work to explore potentially suitable areas of land for a new cemetery serving the town – based on factors including size, accessibility and hydrological conditions – and is seeking residents’ views on the following sites, along with suggestions for others:

  • Farmland off the A361 north of Daventry (currently in private ownership)
  • Strips of farmland to the north of Middlemore (currently in private ownership)
  • Daneholme Park (existing public space)
  • Western Meadows, Daventry Country Park (existing public space, nature reserve and conservation area)
  • Areas of land within the planned Church Fields Daventry North East Sustainable Urban Extension (currently in private ownership)
  • Farmland south-east of Daventry (currently in private ownership).

The consultation runs until Friday, 12 July and people are encouraged to have their say by viewing the proposals and giving their feedback via a questionnaire at www.daventrydc.gov.uk/consultation.

DDC’s Environment Portfolio Holder Councillor Jo Gilford said: “Welton Road cemetery will soon run out of plots and although the Council has no statutory duty to provide a new one in the town, we are mindful that there are residents in our community who will require burial rather than cremation for reasons of religion or belief, or it’s their personal preference.

“It could take a number of years to prepare a site, so it’s really important that we start looking at this now and ask people what they think.

“We have highlighted a number of potential sites that could be explored further, but at this early stage we would encourage and welcome further suggestions from residents as part of this consultation.”
