DAVID ON HIS ROUTE AROUND THE COUNTY
David Smith has been a Red Cross volunteer for over 10 years and for the next few weekends he will be cycling almost 200 miles around the outer edges of the Northamptonshire County in order to raise funds for the Northamptonshire branch of the British Red Cross.
“At the moment, our work in Northamptonshire with the Red Cross is largely responding to local humanitarian needs as a result of the Covid crisis,” said David, “We respond to requests from Northamptonshire Council when people can’t get food or medication and our volunteers step in to help with shopping, food parcel deliveries and prescription collections.”

David’s grandfather was an Army Medic and stretcher bearer for the duration of the entire First World War and David remembers his grandfather telling him of the Canadian Red Cross food parcels that the troops would receive in the trenches. He recalls his grandfather telling him that it was a much-needed source of comfort in times of conflict. Two years ago, David provided cheese to a food bank in Winnipeg run by friends of his. Winnipeg had sent nurses to the Hospital in Taplow where David was born.

David, who lives in Brackley, told us, “History has turned again as now I am a small part of a large team of British Red Cross volunteers in Northamptonshire providing food and deliveries of essential supplies in our current conflict with a new enemy – Covid19”.
