Millionaire Northamptonshire business man, Matthew Gibbard (50) was shot dead in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires on Saturday morning after armed robbers attempted to steal luggage from him and his stepson, Stefan Zone (28). It’s believed that the two men and their families were possibly targeted after leaving the city’s airport as part of a planned attack by motorcycle crime gangs.
The attack took place as the two men were getting out of a vehicle outside of the Faena Art Hotel in the exclusive waterfront area of Puerto Madero. The two men reportedly tried to fight off their attackers who eventually fled empty handed. After the attack Lowick resident Mr Gibbard and Mr Zone were taken to a local hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest, but Mr Gibbard did not survive. Mr Zone is still receiving treatment in hospital.
Buenos Aires press are reporting that four men have been arrested but no other details are available.
The attack has been condemned by Alberto Fernandez, Argentina’s President.
A local newspaper reported that Mr Gibbard’s mother and wife and Mr Zone’s wife and brother were also at the scene and the Foreign Office is supporting the family.
