Daventry Area Crime -

Northants Police are rolling out hand held scanners to officers as another part of their attempt to reduce knife crime across the county. The scanners will be used by officers who will be stopping youths and searching them for weapons.

One officer Tweeted this week, “Just taken delivery of these! Handheld scanner (metal detectors) to distribute across the force. Thanks to @NorthantsOPFCC for funding these, a great tool for engagement to continue the #OpSceptre and #StopKnifeCrime work.”

Northamptonshire Police say that knife crime is on the rise in the county and they are working closely with partners to help tackle the issue. Last year officers seized 453 knives.

Chief Inspector James Willis, District Commander, said: “We are committed to tackling violent crime and as part of Operation Viper, our countywide operation to tackle serious and organised crime, we are determined to crackdown on those involved violence and weapons related offences.

“Operation Sceptre allows police forces across the country to remind people of the dangers of carrying a knife and also the potential consequences people face.

“You may think carrying a knife will ensure your safety and give you protection, but in reality if you carry a knife there is a greater risk it will be used, either by you or on you.

“If you carry a knife you could use it in heat of the moment and seriously injure or kill someone, or it could be used on you.

“You also face the prospect of being arrested if you are found carrying a knife in public, which could lead to a criminal conviction. This can have significant consequences for the rest of your life, including restricting your chances of travelling to some foreign countries and job prospects.”

If you are concerned about any knife related activity you are urged to dial 999 in an emergency or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to speak to someone confidentially.
