Year 5 pupils from Weedon Bec Primary School and their teachers turned out in force this week when an appeal went out to help clear stones from a village playing field.
An area of the Jubilee Playing Field has been reclaimed by the Parish Council after it was found that an area of contaminated earth, known locally as ‘The Mound’, had also been used as a dump for military equipment and ammunitions going back as far as the Napoleonic Wars. Keeping the site safe and clearing the waste to make a safe playing area has cost the village hundreds of thousands of pounds – even though the Ministry of Defence eventually agreed to fund some of the costs.
The children worked on hands and knees filling buckets and sacks with hundreds of loose stones which are now lying on the surface as a result of the new earth works and problems caused by last year’s wet weather.
Weedon Bec Parish Councillor, Fiona Edwards, said, “This is an excellent example of how young children can make a positive contribution in their neighbourhoods. Weedon also has a Junior Parish Council and the village children are given a public voice in the things that affect them in Weedon.” Parish Councillor Fiona Thomas was also on hand to help and was instrumental in getting support through her role working with the Junior Parish Council. Other residents and council officials also joined in the ‘stoning’ event, eventually clearing a large pile of rubble from the area.
Teacher Mrs Aimee Wood said, “The parish council are working so hard to get the field back in use. It was good to be helping them. Here are some of the comments from the children” –
“It was amazing to find so many different stones”
“I loved being able to help out our community”
“I can’t wait for the field to re-open properly”
“I thought it might be a bit boring but it was awesome!”
“We even found massive bricks! It was fun digging those out!”
More to be done
However, there is still quite a bit more stone-picking to be done and the Parish Council are hoping that the next event on Saturday May 11th will attract more public-spirited people from around the village who have some weekend time available.
The Weedon Parish Council Facebook page says “Please come along and help us between 10am and noon.
It’s a win-win situation. This is your chance to be one of the first residents to walk on the newly created area, so a great opportunity for selfies and you help us get the area opened quicker for the whole village to enjoy.
Bring your gloves and meet us by the fenced area at Jubilee Field. Hope to see you there. Refreshments will be available.”
Daventry Radio’s Steve Edwards was also there to lend a hand and says he highly recommends bringing a rake if you have one!
